About Lesson

Secure sockets layer (or SSL for short) is a security protocol for keeping an internet connection secure and safeguarding any sensitive information during transmission over the internet. An SSL certificate is a digital certificate that secures a connection between servers and clients. The updates and more secure version of SSL is known as TLS (or transport layer security). When a website is secured by an SSL certificate, the protocol of that website will be HTTPS (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure) instead of HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol). Additionally, a lock pad will appear next to the URL on the browser address bar.  Lastly, clicking on the pad lock in the browser address bar will reveal details of the certificate, including the issuing authority and corporate name of the website owner.

Main take away: if a website is collecting sensitive user information, it must be SSL secured else it should not be trusted with any personal information.

Engage with the video to learn how to issue and enforce an SSL certificate on a website form the cPanel dashboard.  If you are using a different control panel (e.g., Plesk, Direct admin, Webmin, ISP manager etc.), then the process of issuing and enforcing SSL on your website might be different, as such reach out to your web hosting provider and ask them how you can do this.
